A UI for maintaining and operating building heating and cooling equipment.
Building operators and maintenance workers use this UI to keep in touch with all the systems and sensors within a structure to keep it comfortable and safe. The graphics are a schematic representation of the actual equipment within the building.
I worked solo to modernize the old style of graphics at ESC Automation. A simplistic style guide was developed to be consistent with older standards but update the visual design.
A deep understanding of existing goals and standards was important to learn before building a more modernized UI. Existing clients had come to learn certain standards and often wished to keep things the same for easy comprehension. I had to identify where things could be improved and what elements should remain the same or similar.
After some preliminary design and testing, I arranged and conducted a meeting and presentation with my team where we discussed further iterations and possible problems with the designs. Feedback was implemented and some of the designs were adjusted. Once we had some user testing and feedback, further adjustments were made that also helped to correct some issues with mobile devices.
Initial Mockups Palette Presentation
The latest iteration not only allows for a simpler method to construct new graphics for customers, but has a consistent design across the elements to quickly convey the system and building status to users and allow for easy navigation. Mobile interactions also had to be considered as the market for controlling building systems moves towards different mobile platforms.
